Mission Statement

Northwest Youth Symphony Association promotes personal growth and self-esteem while teaching the values of teamwork and excellence, through preparation and performance of musical masterpieces.

Youth Musicians of varying skill levels from around Northwest Washington come together to present masterpieces of music. We truly enjoy presenting the works of our string, winds, brass and percussion members.

Our Board of Directors is committed to the enrichment and advancement of skilled young musicians. We encourage musicians of all ages from elementary school through age 24, from any county in the Northwest. Currently we serve students from up to 16 different school districts depending on the season.

Six geographically distanced branches —Fidalgo Youth Symphony (FYS), Kulshan Youth Symphony (KYS), Mount Baker Youth Symphony (MBYS), Pilchuk Youth Symphony (PYS), Salish Youth Symphony (SYS) and Whidbey Island Youth Symphony (WIYS) function under the non-profit umbrella organization of Northwest Youth Symphony Association (NYSA), which is a registered 501(c)3.

FYS, established in 1995, offers orchestral training and experience for talented young musicians in Northwest Washington. FYS rehearses weekly during the academic year on Thursday evenings in Mount Vernon and performs four Saturday concerts throughout the season.

KYS is launching in 2025 and is a smaller satellite location for students who live further north. KYS rehearses weekly on Monday evenings in Lynden and joins FYS, MBYS, PYS, SYS and WIYS for the four concerts in Mount Vernon.

MBYS, established in 1990, is a smaller satellite location for students who live further north. MBYS rehearses weekly on Monday evenings in Bellingham and joins FYS, KYS, PYS, SYS and WIYS for the four concerts in Mount Vernon.

PYS is launching in 2025 and is a smaller satellite location for students who live further south. PYS rehearses weekly during the academic year on Thursday evenings in Marysville and joins FYS, KYS, MBYS, SYS and WIYS for the four Saturday concerts in Mount Vernon.

SYS, was established in 2024 for students who live on south Whidbey Island. SYS rehearses weekly in Freeland, WA on Monday evenings and join FYS, KYS, MBYS, PYS and WIYS for the four concerts in Mount Vernon.

WIYS, established in 2023, is a mid-size satellite location for students who live on the north end of Whidbey Island. WIYS rehearses weekly in Oak Harbor on Monday evenings and join FYS, KYS, MBYS, PYS and SYS for the four concerts in Mount Vernon.
