How do I join a symphony?

To begin the adventure of music with us, email info@fysmbys.org. We will then schedule an audition in order to place the student in the symphony group that best fits their skill level.

Why should students join?

  • Teamwork: As you meet each week with fellow musicians, you can learn valuable listening skills and perform beautiful music together.

Frequently Asked Questions

We welcome all ages of youth musicians, up to 21 years, based on their musical competence.
It is easy to join throughout the year. You may begin rehearsing with us for any of our four concerts: Fall, Holiday, Spring, and Finale.
FYS Rehearsals are on Thursdays in Mount Vernon. Location: Mount Vernon First United Methodist Church, 1607 E Division St, Mount Vernon, WA 98274 • Sinfonette 5:30-6:30 pm • Junior 5:30-7:00 pm • Youth 6:30-8:45 pm MBYS Rehearsals are on Mondays in Bellingham, WA Location: Trinity Lutheran Church, Grace Center, 119 Texas Street, Bellingham • Sinfonette 5:30-6:30 pm • Junior 5:30-7:00 pm • Youth 6:30-8:45 pm WIYS Rehearsals are on Mondays in Oak Harbor, WA Location: Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, 1253 NW 2nd Ave, Oak Harbor, WA 98277 • Sinfonette 7:00-7:45 pm • Junior 7:30-8:45 pm • Youth 7:30-9:00 pm

We offer three levels:

• Sinfonette: for those who have played their instrument for two years minimum
• Junior Symphony: playing arrangements of great masterpieces and novelty pieces
• Youth Symphony: most advanced, performing masterworks by famous composers, movie themes, jazz tunes and a variety of other styles. Student soloists are featured in the season Finale concert.

Be prepared to play a two minute solo and your most advanced scales – one major and one minor. Percussionists play a variety of your most advanced rhythms. There will be brief sight reading as well.
